Nursing Admissions

Overview

Effective September 11, 2017, students applying for admission, transfer, or readmission to any N. C. community college or university must establish residency using a Residency Determination Service (RDS) application. This service will allow a student to use one residency determination (in-state or out-of-state) for admissions applications to multiple NC public colleges and universities and to demonstrate residency for financial aid consideration. Applicants who wish to enter the Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, or any of programs listed below must meet additional admissions requirements beyond those established for general College admission. Students who provide false information when applying to any of the program options will be disqualified for admissions.

ADN & LPN Special Admissions Requirements

New students must complete an Admissions Application, including a residency determination request. All applicants must complete Residency Determination to determine tuition status (in-state or out-of-state) prior to completing and submitting an admissions application. Documentation may be required during this process. Once you have completed your Residency Determination, you will be provided a Residency Certification Number (RCN) that can be used to complete your Admissions Application.

Students desiring admission into the nursing program (Associate Degree Nursing or Practical Nursing Daytime) must complete the following steps by March 15 to be considered for the Fall semester.

All applicants meeting the minimum stated requirements for consideration will be reviewed after the deadline. The college reserves the right to extend the application period when warranted.

  • Download the ADN/PN Program Application using the link provided below.
  • Complete the ADN/PN Program Application in its entirety.  This includes completing the TEAS test scores section, required pre-requisite courses section and related courses section.

Your TEAS Individual Performance Profile and ATI transcript can be downloaded from your ATI account at atitesting.com. Under Main Menu, select “My Results”. We only accept TEAS scores from a proctored testing site. TEAS scores from a remote proctor will NOT be accepted.
  • Applicants from previous years who met the minimum qualifications will need to update their application with Student Services and resubmit their ADN/PN Program Application.

As of spring 2024, sampson community college will no longer offer the pn evening class schedule.

Applicants must earn an Academic Preparedness level of Proficient, Advanced, or Exemplary on the ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) to be eligible to apply to the LPN or ADN nursing program. The ATI TEAS must be completed at a proctored testing site. The TEAS test can be completed at SCC. TEAS scores from a remote proctor will NOT be accepted.  One retake per academic year (July 1st – June 30th) is permitted. This is true regardless of the testing site.  Visit “How is the ATI TEAS test scored?” to see how scores are equated.

Application Review Process

Admission into the Nursing Programs is a competitive selection process for a limited number of students. Fully qualified students will be ranked based on a point system. Points will be awarded for the ATI TEAS and other criteria. Using a formula that assigns numerical values to specific criteria, all applicants will be ranked. Acceptance into the ADN or PN programs will be based upon the highest cumulative scores.

Point System for ADN/PN Applications

ATI TEAS

All applicants will be awarded points for admission based on scores earned for the ATI TEAS.

Points for College Course Work

Applicants who have completed nine or more hours of ADN curriculum course work or six or more hours of PN curriculum course work will be awarded points for admission based upon the grades received. For purposes of this computation, the GPA will be calculated based on all related courses attempted within the curriculum. Note: Developmental course work is excluded from this computation of points.

Additional Requirements

Upon admission to the nursing programs, students will be required to submit a criminal background check and drug screening, as directed by affiliating clinical agencies. The results of the background check and drug screen may determine if a student is eligible to enter clinical agencies. Students are responsible for the cost of the background check and drug screen. Applicants should be aware that a student must be able to enter and/or remain in all clinical agencies to progress within the program. If a clinical site denies a student placement in their facility, the student would be unable to complete the required clinical component of the course; therefore, the student will be withdrawn from all nursing courses and will not be allowed to progress in the program. The background check and drug screening must be completed by the specified date. Failure to complete the process as specified will jeopardize enrollment in the program.

Nursing program applicants should be aware that if they have pleaded guilty to or have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor (other than a minor traffic violation), the NC Board of Nursing may restrict or deny licensure. The NC Board of Nursing requires criminal history checks for each person applying to practice nursing in the state of North Carolina.

Statement Regarding Vaccinations

Sampson Community College does not require specific vaccines in order to enroll or attend classes on campus. Nursing and health science programs require clinical hours to be completed at one or more at clinical sites under agreement with the College. Students admitted to these programs must comply with the requirements set by outside clinical agencies which may include a criminal background check, drug screen, physical, and/or specific vaccines. Decisions about an individual student’s presence in the clinical environment are made by the clinical agencies.

Clinical sites may be subject to the COVID-19 requirements of the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services or other requirements established by the clinical site. Students are guests in these clinical facilities and in order to maintain clinical privileges, must abide by the clinical site’s requirements for students and faculty.

Notice of changes of agency requirements may or may not provide students or faculty with advance notice of any changes. If vaccination becomes a requirement at one of SCC’s clinical agencies, lack thereof may affect students and their completion of a course and program.

If requirements are made by an SCC clinical agency and a student chooses not to comply, they may not be eligible to complete the clinical requirements of the program and will become unable to complete a course and the program.

Licensure Disclosures

The nursing programs at Sampson Community College satisfy the professional licensure requirements in North Carolina and prepare students to sit for these exams. However, requirements in other states may be different. North Carolina is considered a compact state regarding licensure. If you are considering a program that may lead to a professional license, it is advised to inquire with your prospective state Board of Nursing.
