Overview

Sampson Community College promotes free discussion, inquiry and self-expression, and upholds the personal freedom and general welfare of the members of the student body. The Student Government Association (SGA) of Sampson Community College is the official student governing organization of the College. Student activities are an important part of the total development of the individual student. The SGA plans and coordinates fun activities, special events, and educational programming throughout the academic year. Opportunities for engagement increase students’ awareness of personal capabilities and further develop leadership skills. All curriculum students by virtue of their registration are members of the Student Government Association of Sampson Community College.

Responsibilities

Within their capacity as representatives of the student body, the Sampson Community College Student Government Association, also known as SGA, fulfills a range of responsibilities such as:

Chartering and regulating student clubs and organizations on campus
Providing student activities like Fall Festival, Spring Fling, Welcome Back Celebrations, the Jingle Bell Rock and other exciting events on campus
Coordinating community service projects such as collection drives
Representing interests and concerns of the student body by serving on college-wide committees made up of students, faculty, administrators and staff members.

Objectives

The objectives of the Student Government Association are:

To promote the welfare of the students.
To establish laws to govern student conduct and elections.
To establish an annual budget for the Activity Fee Fund.
To advise and work with the administration in the improvement of student life.

Membership

All curriculum students by virtue of their registration are members of the Student Government Association of Sampson Community College.
All students required to pay an activity fee to this College shall be eligible to vote in all Student Government Association elections during their period of enrollment.

Join a Club/Organization – Review the list of Clubs and Organizations that might appeal to you. Contact the advisor if you are interested in joining.

Participate in Events – The SGA organizes many of the major events on campus. Look for flyers and announcements throughout campus. Also, visit the college Events Calendar for dates and times.

2022-2023 SGA Officers

President
Taylor Hill

A transfer from Sampson Middle School, Taylor Hill is a sophomore at Sampson Early College High School (SECHS) who plans to graduate in 2026 with her Associate of Science degree and high school diploma. After graduation, she plans to either join the Air Force or attend UNC or Duke to become a NICU nurse.

In addition to the Student Government Association (SGA), Hill is also an avid member of the BETA Club, receiving an Academic Allstar Award and making the Honor Roll and Principal’s List throughout her first few semesters at SECHS. She also assists the media team at her church and helps with their summer VBS’s. Last year, she enjoyed dancing with Clinton’s Carolina Dance Company as well.

Through her position as SGA President, Hill hopes to bring light to mental health awareness and let SCC students know that they have a bright future ahead and so much to live for. She plans to be an advocate for students and make sure they get all the necessary resources needed to be successful at the College. By planning events and creating opportunities for them, Hill wants students to have access to anything they may want or need during their time at SCC.

Vice President
Rutben Cruz

A transfer from Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School, Rutben Cruz is a junior at SECHS who plans to graduate in 2024 with his Associate of Arts degree and high school diploma. After graduation, he plans to pursue a degree in Sports Medicine to either become a physical or orthopedic therapist.

In addition to the SGA, Cruz is also an avid member of the Juntos Club at SECHS, recently taking a trip to NC State to meet with Juntos region presidents and other student members. He also competes twice a year in US Powerlifting competitions all around the state. This year, he set two new records in NC for the 16-17 age group. In the future, Cruz still plans to compete after transferring to a four-year university.

Through his position as SGA Vice President, Cruz hopes to celebrate the diverse culture that is within the College, especially the Latino community. Since SCC is considered to be a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), Cruz plans to implement and create activities for the celebration and appreciation of the College’s Hispanic culture—to truly showcase the fact students attend an HSI. By teaming up with SECHS’s Juntos program during Hispanic Heritage month, Cruz plans to increase and celebrate the Latino voice within SCC.
