Verbos y preposiciones

The prepositions "a", "con", "de",  y "en" can be used with verbs to form certain expressions.

Verbs requiring the preposition "a"

1. Some verbs require "a" when they are followed by an infinitive:

Verb and definition Spanish example English translation
aprender (a) = to learn  Ya aprendí a manejar. I already learned to drive.
comenzar (a) = to begin Ya comencé a lavar los platos. I already began to wash the dishes.
decidirse (a) = to decide Me decidí a estudiar la medicina. I decided to study medicine.
detenerse (a) = to stop Me detuve a comer después de las 7. I stopped eating after 7pm.
enseñar (a) = to teach La profesora les enseña a leer en español. The teacher teaches them to read in Spanish.
ir (a) = to go Voy a comprar nuevos zapatos. I'm going to buy new shoes.

2. Some verbs require "a" when followed by a noun

Verb and definition Spanish example English translation
asitir (a) = to attend  Asistí a escuela en 1985. I attended school in 1985.
entrar (a) = to enter José entró a la tienda. José entered the store.

3. Some verbs require "a" when followed by a noun or an infinitive

Verb and definition Spanish example English translation
ayudar (a) = to help  Le ayudo a estudiar. I help him study.
comenzar (a) = to begin Ya comencé a lavar los platos. I already began to wash the dishes.
decidirse (a) = to decide Me decidí a estudiar la medicina. I decided to study medicine.

4. Some verbs use "a" only to introduce nouns referring to people, pets, personnified objects, quien(es), or indefinite or negative words such as alguien, alguna, nadie, ningún, etc...

amar (a) = to love  Ella no ama a nadie. She doesn't love anyone.
buscar (a) = to look for José buscaba a Frisky. He was looking for Frisky.
conocer (a) = to decide No lo conozco a Pedro. I don't know Pedro.
encontrar (a) = to meet Lo encontré al centro. I met him at the mall.
visitar (a) = to visit Ella siempre visita a sus abuelos durante el verano. She always visits her grandparents during the summer.

Verbs requiring the preposition "con"

Verb and definition Spanish example English translation
casarse (con) = to marry, to get married (to)  Blancanieves se casa con el Principe Encantador. Snow White is marrying Prince Charming.
comprometerse (con) = to get engaged to Jack se está comprometido con Jill el lunes. Jack is getting engaged to Jill on Monday.

Verbs requiring the preposition "de"

Verb and definition Spanish example English translation
acordarse (de) = to remember  Me acordé de su nombre. I remembered his name.
alegrarse (de) = to be happy Me alegro del fin de semana empieza mañana. I'm glad happy the weekend begins tomorrow.
arrenpentirse (de) = to repent Me arrepentí de mis pecados. I repented my sins.
avergonzarse (de) = to be ashamed Se avergüenza de su voz  femenina. He's ashamed of his girly voice.
burlarse (de) = to make fun of Se burlan de su voz femenina. They make fun of his girly voice.
darse cuenta (de) = to realize Me doy cuenta de que no estudiabas. I realize that you didn't study.
dejar (de) = to stop No deja de intentar. Don't stop trying.
depender (de) = to depend Las notas buenas dependen de los estudios. Good grades depend on studying.
enamorarse (de) = to fall in love Me enamoré de los Steelers cuando era una niña pequeña. I fell in love with the Steelers when I was a small girl.
enterarse (de) = to find out Me enteré de Bob was adopted yesterday. I found out (heard) Bob was adopted yesterday.
olvidarse (de) = to forget Me olvidé de decirle el ingrediente secreto. I forgot to tell him the secret ingredient.
quejarse (de) = to complain Ella siempre se queja de la brillante luna. She always complains of the bright moon.
reírse (de) = to laugh about Se ríe de todo. He laughs about everything.

Verbs requiring the preposition "en"

Verb and definition Spanish example English translation
consentir (en) = to agree, consent  Consiento en lavar los platos los lunes. I agree to wash the dishes on Mondays.
consistir (en) = to consist Su familia consiste en ella y en sus cinco gatos. Her family consists of her and her five cats.
convertirse (en) = to become Me convertí en una profesora de literatura. I became a literature teacher.
entrar (en) = to enter Entre en su propio riesgo. Enter at your own risk.
fijarse (en) = to notice Me lo fijé en inmediatemente. I noticed him immediately.
insistir (en) = to insist Insisto en que haga su tarea I insist you do your homework.
pensar (en) = to think Pienso en ti todo el tiempo. I think about you all the time.
quedar (en) = to agree Quedamos en encontrarnos aquí We agreed to meet here.
tardar (en) = to delay La lluvia tardó en el tren. The rain delayed the train.
