Oscar Rodriguez, born and raised in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, relocated to America in 2000 to pursue an education. While working full-time at the Department of Social Services and working part-time at Burger King, he enrolled full-time at Sampson Community College. “I enjoyed working, but not having an education left me unfulfilled,” he says. He admits that his motive for moving to America was to pursue a career and educational opportunities, and he wasn’t willing to let them pass him by. After obtaining his Associate of Arts, Rodriguez transferred to Mt. Olive College and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Business. Rodriguez says he always felt a strong connection to SCC because of their diligence and passion for helping students, so when the position of Bilingual Coordinator opened, he applied. He admits that with the influx of Hispanic-speaking students, he wanted those students to have the same educational opportunities that were afforded to him. After two years in that position, Rodriguez is now the Director of Admissions and impacts students everyday with his positive and encouraging message. “I want students of all backgrounds tosee how I’ve not only made a better life for myself, for the future of my family as well.”
