Jennifer Brewer is a success in anyone’s eyes. Bright, outgoing, positive and determined are just a few words to describe this student who is preparing to graduate from Sampson Community College in May 2009. However, her journey has been more challenging than most. Brewer entered SCC in 2003 with the aspirations of becoming a nurse, but her plans changed in May 2003 after a routine visit to the doctor. “I went for a checkup after noticing bruises on my arms that wouldn’t go away,” says Brewer. The very next day, she was diagnosed with leukemia. She started chemotherapy and since that date has undergone multiple surgeries and treatments including two bone marrow transplants. While the strain and medical treatments have taken a toll on her body, they haven’t diminished her spirits. “Her encouraging demeanor makes all who are around her want to strive to be their best,” says Amy Noel, Dean of Student Services. “She is truly an inspiration to everyone she meets.” Brewer says she made a decision a long time ago not to give into her circumstances. “It would be so easy to stay in the bed everyday,” she says. “But I want an education, and I’m not going to let this sickness take that away from me.” Brewer reports to class four days a week, and she is preparing to graduate with her Associates Degree in Business Administration in May. Despite all that she has endured, those around Brewer are constantly amazed at her determination. Gene Park, Brewer’s advisor and Business Administration and Accounting instructor says he couldn’t ask for a better student. “She’s one of the finest students I’ve ever had, and she never misses class unless she is receiving treatment. When asked what motivates her, Brewer simply states, “I’ve been through too much to stop now. I’m going to keep going no matter what.” As for her future goals, Brewer says she is looking forward to graduation and hopefully landing a job. “I have goals and dreams I want to achieve, and I’m excited about what the future holds,” she optimistically adds.
