IN-SERVICE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING
Counter Terrorism Training
A variety of courses are offered to emergency responders that specialize
in counter terrorism. These courses address both domestic and international
terrorist concerns. Additional offerings are forthcoming for businesses
and citizen involvement through Citizen Corps.
Meth Awareness
The Sampson County Meth Task Force is made up of Sampson County leaders,
with an aim to reduce the tragedies brought about by making and using
methamphetamine. Meth manufacturing and use is a recognized national crisis
and it has aggressively moved into our state. The Task Force has developed
strategic initiatives that are aimed at informing, reducing, intervening,
and educating the citizenry of the addiction and dangers surrounding this
drug. Courses for emergency responders are being offered on a continual
basis. Civic club or community group presentations may be arranged upon
request.
Gang Awareness
This course will increase the law enforcement officer?s understanding
of various gangs that operate in this region of the state. Particular
attention will be given to related criminal activity, gang territories,
signs/symbols, and other indicators of gang activity.
Courtroom Security
This course will focus on the courtroom and related security strategies.
Three specific areas of concentration will include: internal courtroom
physical security, external court physical security, and behavioral indicators
for security and safety in the judicial setting. This course should be
of particular interest to deputy sheriffs, bailiffs, attorneys, clerks,
and others that function as judicial participants in the courtroom setting.
Traffic Enforcement
This course is designed as a refresher and introduction to traffic enforcement
in North Carolina. The instructor will look at proven techniques to reduce
accidents and deal with negative driving partners that may endanger the
motoring public.
Physical Fitness for Law Officers
New devices currently in use do not take away the responsibility of an
officer to remain physically fit to effectively carry out his duties.
This course is designed to discuss the importance of a personalized daily
fitness plan that focuses on improving flexibility, endurance, and strength
building.
Computers for Law Officers
Today?s technology continues to demand officers have a working knowledge
of computers and the systems in which they operate. Criminal activity
continues to flourish on the internet and victims often go unseen. This
course is designed to create an understanding of applications of current
computer technology and how this can benefit the daily activities of professional
law enforcement officers.
Incident Command for Responding
Officers
When a call for officer assistance is dispatched, officer response is
immediate and overwhelming. This course will discuss procedures and identify
ways to prevent on-scene confusion while maintaining suspect control.
Spanish for Law Enforcement Officers
The increasing number of spanish speaking people in our communities is
requiring officers to expand their communication abilities. This course
will focus on terms and phrases that will help officers better serve the
public in times of crisis. Particular attention will be given to understanding
and communicating critical phrases to ensure safety.
DWI Detection & Standardized
Field Sobriety
This 32-hour course will enable participants to better detect
and arrest DWI violators and therefore reduce the number of traffic crashes,
deaths, and injuries associated with impaired drivers. The student will
be able to administer the Standardized Field Sobriety Test Battery and
describe DWI evidence in a clear and convincing manner in both written
notes and verbal testimony. Attendance is required at all class sessions
and a minimum of 80% must be attained on the final exam. NOTE: This class
will count towards the N.C. Justice Academy’s Traffic Enforcement
and Investigation Certificate Program.
At-Scene Traffic Crash Investigation
This 80-hour course will enable the participants to locate, identify,
and preserve evidence most commonly found at the scene of traffic crashes,
and perform a variety of mathematical formulas including speed, velocity,
time, and distance. Students should bring all traffic crash investigation
equipment to class, including 100’/300’ tapes, hammer/masonry
nails, scientific calculator, DMV-349 forms and manual, a digital camera
(if possible), and safety equipment. NOTE: This class will count towards
the N.C. Justice Academy’s Traffic Enforcement and Investigation
Certificate Program. The class dates are: October 22, 23, 29, 30, November
5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20.
Mandated In-Service Classes
The in-service training requirements are
outlined in the Administrative Code 12 NC AC 09E. It requires that
every law enforcement officer certified by the Criminal Justice
Education and Training Standards Commission must receive 24 hours
of in-service training annually.

Each of these classes will meet at the Sampson County Wellness
Center on Beaman Street.
