HEALTH AND MEDICAL

American Red Cross CPR/First Aid
This 9-hour class will be offered on the following dates and covers both certification and recertification skills. Each class meets from 6pm until 10pm in the East Building. The cost of each course is a $50.00 tuition fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, and a $5.00 Red Cross fee.

American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Providers
This 8-hour class will be offered on the following dates and covers both certification and recertification skills. Health care providers are trained in CPR techniques for adults, infants and children, as well as the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Successful completion of a written and skills test is required for a course completion card. Six classes have been scheduled (see dates below). The cost of each course is a $50.00 tuition fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, and a $2.50 American Heart Association fee. Students must call and pre-register. Class size is limited to 16 students per class.

Medical Terminology
This 120-hour course is designed to offer the participant a basic understanding of medical words and terms. Emphasis is placed on spelling and defining commonly used prefixes, suffixes, root words, and the combining forms. Program content covers the elements of medical terms and names of major diseases, including terms used in physical exams, operation procedures, and diagnosis. This course is recommended as a pre-requisite to the Medical Transcription course. The cost of the course is a $60.00 tuition fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, and a $66.77 book fee.

Medical Transcription
This 176-hour course is designed to expose students to the skills necessary to work as a medical transcriptionist. The participant should be able to type a minimum of 30-40 words per minute and have basic computer skills. Medical Terminology is the prerequisite for this course. The tuition fee is $65.00.

Nurse Aide I
This 160-hour course prepares students to provide basic health and personal care for patients. After satisfactory completion of the course and competency and measurement evaluations, the student will be placed on the state registry of the N.C. Division of Facility Services. The tuition fee is 65.00. Additional fees include lab, student insurance, malpractice insurance, and books. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Health Careers.

Nurse Aide Refresher
Students must have previously been listed on the Nurse Aide Registry. This 40-hour course consists of primarily retesting to assess knowledge. Each student must complete the course with passing academic and attendance requirements to maintain registry with the NC Division of Facility Services and NC Board of Nursing. The cost of the course is a $60.00 tuition fee, a $10.00 lab fee, and a $1.30 student insurance fee. Students are also required to purchase a textbook.


Phlebotomy
This 200-hour course prepares the student to draw blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analyzing blood. Students will learn how to maintain equipment used in obtaining blood specimens, the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients, the selection of venipuncture sites, the care of blood specimens, and the entry of the testing process into the computer, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping of the blood tests. This course consists of theory and clinical experiences in performing blood collections. The tuition fee is $65.00. Additional fees include lab, student insurance, malpractice insurance, and books. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Health Careers or proof of exemption**.

EKG Technician
This 48-hour course is designed and approved to prepare the student to become a certified EKG Technician, following the requirements of the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT). Students will have knowledge of cardiac terminology, understand the structure and function of the heart, and understand the anatomy and physiology of the heart. Students will have a basic understanding of the electrical conduction system and how it affects heart function. Based upon this knowledge, students will know why an EKG is done. They will understand the cardiac cycle, be able to identify common artifacts, and demonstrate patient prep as well as proper placement of EKG leads. Students will be able to operate the equipment, run a strip accurately, and mount it properly. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the national certification examination through ASPT. The cost of the course is a $60.00 tuition fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, a $16.00 malpractice fee, and book fees. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Health Careers**.

Pharmacy Tech
This 108-hour course will provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to perform as a highly skilled technician under the supervision of a pharmacist. Topics included are the drug distribution system, pharmacy law, calculations, vocabulary, and human physiology and disease with an emphasis on drug therapy. The tuition fee is $65.00, the student insurance fee is $1.30, and the book fees are $82.90. There will be a few Saturday class sessions included in the course, which will meet from 8:30am until 2:30pm. Pre-requisite: Introduction to Health Careers**.

Medical Responder
This 83-hour entry-level course prepares you to take the NC state exam for medical responders. This will allow you to function with a rescue squad or transport service. Students will be taught basic life saving skills, medical-legal, and safety as it relates to patient care. One Saturday class is required for end of course evaluations. The cost of the course is a $60.00 tuition fee. The book fee is approximately $65.00.

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
This 203-hour course will prepare the student to assist in the emergency and medical care of patients in the pre-hospital setting. Students will receive instruction in both classroom and clinical settings. Students will be required to take the state certification exam. There will be some Saturday class sessions, which will meet from 8am until 5pm. The cost of the course is a $65.00 tuition fee, a $10.00 lab fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, a $16.00 malpractice fee, and a book fee of approximately $80.00.

Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate
The EMT-Intermediate course is a 256-hour class/clinical experience that expands on the cognitive and practical skills learned at the EMT-Basic level and instructs the students in further advanced life support (ALS), procedures such as pharmacology, advanced airway techniques, and cardiac emergency management. An in-depth study of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology is included to assist the student in understanding pharmacological agents and their affects on the body. Laboratory time is spent learning and practicing specific patient assessment techniques, IV drug administration, ECGs, and reviewing cognitive and practical skills covered in the classroom. Students are required to perform learned advanced procedures, to include drug administration on actual patients under the supervision of physicians, nurses, and paramedics during hospital and clinical rotations. The cost of the course is a $65.00 tuition fee, a $10.00 lab fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, a $16.00 malpractice fee, and book fees.

EMT-Paramedic
This 1096-hour advanced level course is designed to build upon the skills of the EMT and the EMT-I. The course prepares you to treat patients utilizing advanced procedures in the areas of cardiac, respiratory, medical, and traumatic emergencies. During this course, the student will also have the opportunity to complete ACLS, PALS, and BTLS. The cost of the course is a $65.00 tuition fee, a $10.00 lab fee, a $1.30 student insurance fee, a $16.00 malpractice fee, and book fees. Pre/Co-requisite: Anatomy and Physiology for Prehospital Care Providers.

EMD – Emergency Medical Dispatcher
This 24-hour course follows the guidelines established by the NCOEMS, which prepares the student to test for the certification of Emergency Medical Dispatcher. The curriculum for the EMD program shall be the 1996 release of the US DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Emergency Medical Dispatcher: NSC. Although not required, a minimum of one year of experience in an emergency communication is preferred. It is also recommended that students have completed a CPR course meeting the requirements of the American Heart Association, American Red Cross or equivalent Basic Life Support professional rescuer level. This requirement is mandatory for EMD credentialing and would be helpful to the student in completing the program. The cost of the course is a $55.00 tuition fee.

Medical Specialty Classes

BTLS – Basic Trauma Life Support
The Basic Trauma Life Support course is designed to increase the knowledge and skill level of the emergency medical personnel in assessing and treating any trauma-related injury. It is designed for the student to better recognize possible trauma injuries due to mechanism of injury, better assess the patient, and more aggressively treat shock and trauma in general.

ACLS Recertification
This is an 8-hour recertification class. The cost of the course is a $50.00 tuition fee, and a $4.00 American Heart Association fee.

ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support
The ACLS course is designed to certify emergency medical personnel in Advanced Cardiac Life Support through the American Heart Association. This course teaches the proper evaluation and treatment of an adult patient in cardiopulmonary arrest. Upon successful completion, the student will be awarded ACLS certification from the American Heart Association. The cost of the course is a $55.00 tuition fee, and a $4.00 American Heart Association fee.

PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support
The PALS course is designed to certify emergency medical personnel in Pediatric Advanced Life Support through the American Heart Association. This course teaches the proper evaluation and treatment of a pediatric patient in cardiopulmonary arrest. Upon successful completion, the student will be awarded PALS certification from the American Heart Association. The cost of the course is a $55.00 tuition fee, and $4.00 American Heart Association fee.

Monthly EMS Continuing Education Classes

EMS Continuing Education classes are offered monthly per the following schedule. In the event a class is cancelled, we will attempt to have the host department’s page tone activated with an announcement to follow. All classes meet from 7:00pm until 10:00pm with the exception of Clinton Fire Department.
