DEFENSIVE DRIVING SCHOOL
If you have been charged with a minor traffic violation,
the Safe Driving Program may prevent assessment of insurance points
or premium sur-charges on your insurance policy and/or points on
your North Carolina driver?s license. This program is made available
by the District Attorney, area community colleges, and the Safety
and Health Council of North Carolina. To receive these benefits
you must COMPLETE the Council?s 4-hour Defensive Driving
course AT LEAST THREE WORKING DAYS BEFORE your continued
court date. Please confirm benefits with your insurance company.
Complete one 4-hour Defensive Driving course to receive
a reduction to improper equipment.
(1) No insurance points (must check with your provider).
(2) No driver?s license points.
(3) May only enroll once in a three year period.
(4) Courses offered in both English and Spanish.
You are eligible for this program if your citation is for
a traffic infraction including, but not limited to, the following:
| Driving left of center |
Following too closely |
| Exceeding a safe speed |
Improper passing |
| Failing to reduce speed |
Stop sign violations |
| Failing to yield |
Unsafe movement |
Also, the following speeding cases will be eligible for
the Safe Driving Program:
Speed zone 65 mph or less - up to 20 mph over the limit
Speed zone 70 mph or more - up to 15 mph over the limit
You are not eligible for the program if:
(1) You are charged with speeding in a work or school
zone.
(2) You have completed a Safe Driving Program class within the
last three years.
(3) You have received an improper equipment citation (non-moving
violation) within the last three years.
There is a tuition fee of $50.00 per class, as well as
a $145.00 fee for fines and court cost. Each class will be held in Room East
