Division Chair
I came to Sampson Community College in 1999 to become the History instructor. My major areas of interest are mid-19th century Southern History, the Civil War era, and the Great War (WWI). While at SCC I have written two books on the Civil War era, Andersonvilles of the North (2008) and Cape Fear Confederates (2011) as well as numerous articles and book reviews related to the Civil War. In May 2011 I will present a paper as part of North Carolina’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Symposium on Civil War memory along with other scholars from around the country. In addition to participating in the state’s Civil War sesquicentennial program, I am a member of the North Carolina Great War Centennial committee to help commemorate the state’s various roles during the Great War. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife Julie and daughter Lauren, trying to learn how to play the guitar (emphasis on trying), and participating in Great War living history programs and battle weekends.
